Many of the original Transformer molds were imported from the Japanese Diaclone line, and many of these had variant colors and details. Some of these variants made it to US shores — Inferno and Grapple, Prowl, Bluestreak, and Smokescreen, Sideswipe, and Red Alert — while some did not. Skids, for example, came in a silver version with a variant head that was only recently re-released as Cross Cut.

A little-known variant to Wheeljack was dubbed "Marlboro Wheeljack" by fans because its paint job was inspired by the Marlboro-sponsored Lancia Stratos race car. The toy, however, included stickers that said "Marlboor" instead of "Marlboro", leading some fans to call the Diaclone toy Marlboor.

Whether this was a spelling error or a deliberate attempt to avoid royalties is a debate best left elsewhere!

In any event, Marlboor came with a variant head as did so many of his Diaclone brethren. I obtained an outstanding mold of Marlboor's head which I modified to fit the Wheeljack Action Master. I filled in the back of the head to make it make Action-Masterish, and also had to add a screw to the bottom of the mold so it would fit on the Action Master body.

In addition, the latest version now includes the PVC Wheeljack wings in clear blue, as seen on the original version. For those who feel that reds are too strong, I created a "light" version and a "menthol" version.

I used the following colors on Marlboor:
  • Blood Red/Blood Angel Orange mix (Games Workshop)
  • Chaos Black (Games Workshop)
  • Skull White (Games Workshop)
  • Nauseating Blue (Games Workshop)
  • Classic White (Testors Model Master Spray)
